This Day in Rock History: August 19th

Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: August 19

1968
The final episode of The Monkees airs on NBC.  It was later rerun on CBS from 1969-72, and has been aired on several cable networks since.  58 episodes in all, and John Lennon was a fan calling the band a logical extension of the Marx Brothers.

1968

Before they called it karaoke.  Capitol Records issues a Beach Boys album of sing along instrumental music titled “Stack-O-Tracks” and it’s greeted with a yawn failing to chart in the US or UK.  It’s later reissued as a CD with little more success.

1969

Dick Cavett hosts David Crosby, the Jefferson Airplane and Stephen Stills on his ABC-TV show just days after the Woodstock festival.  Joni Mitchell is there as well even though she never made it to Woodstock, but later commemorates the festival in her classic song.

A few days later Jimi Hendrix stops by the Cavett set.  He was supposed to be on the previous show but slept through his wake up call.

Cavett would later say that Hendrix corrected him saying he was originally in favor of the Vietnam war until he saw bodies coming back on the evening news.

1972
A long time Friday late night staple, the first episode of The Midnight Special debuts on NBC hosted by Wolfman Jack.

2005

Dublin honors the late Thin Lizzy guitarist Phil Lynott with a statue on Harry Street.   The statue was designed by noted sculptor Paul Daly.  Lynott died in 1986 and the unveiling is attended by his former band mates.

2018
