Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: October 28
1964
The TAMI show (short for Teen Age Music International) was filmed in Santa Monica in 1964 with a wide range of top acts that was later shown in theaters. Jan and Dean hosted Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Supremes, Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys and others, but it’s best known for the final two acts. James Brown was under the impression he would close the show, but…not so fast. The promoters spent big money to I port the Rolling Stones and they were the final headliners. Now, keep in mind that the Stones didn’t want to follow James Brown either, but they had no say. Brother James takes the stage, drives the crowd into a near riot and struts off the stage, stopping for a moment to look at the crowd. Backstage reports say he defiantly walked past Mick Jagger and said, “Top that!” The Stones hit the stage and Mick Jagger does his best James Brown impression before going back into his familiar stage persona.
1979
Just a year after playing the Cleveland Agora, the Cars headline the Richfield Coliseum. The band formed in Boston but features the talents of two former Greater Clevelanders. “Benny Eleven Letters” (formerly Orzechowski) graduated from Parma‘s Valley Forge High School was a member of various Cleveland bands including the Grasshoppers who had a minor hit with “Mod Socks”. Now known as Ben Orr he played bass for the Cars, while guitarist Ric Ocasek graduated from Maple Heights High School.
