This Day in Rock History: December 21st
Time to take a look back into this day in rock history:
December 21
1968
A one-time member of the Beach Boys and the Wrecking Crew, Glen Campbell has a solo hit with Wichita Lineman. The LP stays on the charts an amazing 46 weeks.
1969
Diana Ross performs one last time with the Supremes on the
Ed Sullivan Show
. The song, “Someday We’ll Be Together”, does not ever occur after she leaves for a solo career.
1970
Elvis Presley requests a meeting with the President Richard Nixon to offer his aid in the fight against drugs. The meeting was kept secret for more than a year.
1985
Battle of the titans! Bruce Springsteen’s
Born in the USA
passed Michael Jackson’s
Thriller
to become the second longest-lasting LP on the
Billboard
US Top Ten for a 79-week run. Julie Andrews
Sound of Music
actually lasted longer at 109 weeks.
2012
Paul Simon performs “The Sound of Silence” at the funeral of a Connecticut teacher who died in a school shooting the week before. Twenty-six people died in that shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. It’s the same song Simon performed at the 9/11 commemoration.
