Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: February 13
“Uh, yeah Don. From now on we are playing our own instruments.” That was pretty much the message given to producer Don Kirshner by the Monkees who at the time had only been recording with session musicians, the Wrecking Crew, on their albums. Not welcome news to Kirshner! What’s interesting here is that Kirshner is an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Monkees are not!
1970
The Doors Ray Manzarek remembers the Allen Theater shows for someone stealing their jackets in a Cleveland winter.

“Miracles”? Meh! Jefferson Starship reluctantly agrees to record Marty Balin’s song, “Miracles”, which becomes a huge hit. Broadcast Music Incorporated awards him a plaque in 1998 for 2 million plays of the song.

Even though she was a bit shy of large audiences, Joni Mitchell did not disappoint at her Cleveland Public Hall tour stop.

The headstone for the late Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant is stolen from its grave in Orange Park, Florida. It weighs 300 pounds! It tuns up two weeks later in a river bed but his family is forced to take action to preserve his legacy.
Accolades and controversy follow Marvin Gaye’s version of the National Anthem at the NBA’s All Star game in Los Angeles.
