Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: March 8
At the time they were rivals for the Beatles’ crown. Ed Sullivan hosts the first of thirteen appearances by Britain’s Dave Clark Five with “Glad All Over”.
Ground zero for New York’s rock scene as promoter Bill Graham opens the Fillmore East in an old movie theater. First night acts include Big Brother and the Holding Company, Albert King and Tim Buckley.
Movie number twenty-six for Elvis Presley with the premiere of Stay Away, Joe in New York City. It’s a western and Elvis plays a Native American rodeo champ. He apparently does pretty well because he’s seen in a white Cadillac later in the film. Interestingly enough, there’s no soundtrack LP.
Another member of the 27 club as the Grateful Dead’s “Pig Pen”, Ron McKernan, dies of a stomach hemorrhage and liver failure. It was brought on by alcohol poisoning.

Another person known as “the fifth Beatle”, producer George Martin, passes at the age of 90. Besides producing most of the Beatles’ most memorable albums, Martin racked up 23 numbers one on the Billboard Hot 100. Granted, 19 of those were by the Beatles, but impressive to say the least.
