Legendary Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh has died at age 84 today. Lesh’s death was confirmed by a message shared on his official social media accounts.
The statement follows:
“Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of The Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by his family and full of love. Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love. We request that you respect the Lesh family’s privacy at this time.”
The Grateful Dead were named 2025 MusiCares Persons of the Year earlier this week. Lesh and fellow surviving original members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bobby Weir were set to be honored at the organization’s benefit gala during Grammy Week.
