Laurel School, an all-girls (K-12) independent school in Shaker Heights, Ohio, announced today the launch of its LaureLive: Music with a Mission music festival on June 11-12, 2016, at Laurel’s 140-acre Butler Campus located at 7420 Fairmount Road spanning Russell and Chester Townships, Ohio. Major international, national and regional acts will perform during the two-day, all-ages, family-friendly festival.
LaureLive is a collaboration between Laurel School and the Cleveland-based Elevation Group.
“Laurel School has a rich legacy of empowering girls to claim their voices and a long tradition of excellence in the arts,” said Headmistress Ann V. Klotz. “A few years ago we began our ‘Music with a Mission’ initiative to bring more arts education and programming to our students and to the community. LaureLive builds on those efforts. This mission-driven festival allows us to proclaim our commitment to the arts, give our students real-world experience via hands-on learning and internships and share our exceptional Butler Campus with a wider audience. As a school known for curricular innovation and excellence, we are very excited to play a major role in launching a new music festival unlike anything else in Northeast Ohio.”
The two-day festival will feature 30 acts, from five countries (USA, South Africa, Ireland, Canada and Australia) performing on three stages, including major recording artists such as: O.A.R., Grace Potter, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Andy Grammer, X Ambassadors, Elle King, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Red Wanting Blue, Civil Twilight, ZZ Ward, Ra Ra Riot and others. It was important to the event’s producers that the lineup retain some distinct local sounds—several Cleveland favorites will be showcased during the weekend including Carlos Jones and Welshly Arms, the latter performing a special set with Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra.
“I’m thrilled to be returning to Cleveland for LaurelLive,” said Grace Potter. “It’s cool that these young women will be joining in the festivities to bring rock and roll to the people!”
“As guys who went to Ohio State and have a huge connection to Cleveland, we are excited to be headlining Day 1 of Cleveland’s very first contemporary music festival,” said Marc Roberge, lead vocalist and guitarist of O.A.R. “LaureLive has done a great job assembling a killer lineup and we are looking forward to visiting the campus and playing for our friends, fans and family.”
“The past 12 months have been an amazing ride for me and I am totally pumped for what 2016 has in store,” said multi-platinum recording artist, Andy Grammer. “Being a part of LaureLive in Cleveland should be a blast! Ohio has the best music fans in the country and I am psyched to see everyone in June at the beautiful Butler Campus.”
“This music event is amazing for all of us in Northeastern Ohio. Having a festival in Cleveland is long overdue,” said Dave Popovich, Vice President of Programming for CBS Radio (which includes Q104 WQAL and Star 102 WDOK). “The lineup of acts is phenomenal in the fact that it includes some of the biggest stars on radio today as well as several incredible live touring bands. Merging education with music is so cool and both Q104 and Star 102 are thrilled to be involved at the highest level.”
In addition to a weekend of great music in a beautiful setting, careful attention will be given to the culinary and family aspects of the event. LaureLive has partnered with Red Frog Events to provide a first-class culinary experience. Red Frog, based in Chicago, owns, operates and curates all culinary aspects for two of the United States’ most successful music festivals—Firefly Music Festival and the Big Barrel Country Music Festival —which are recognized for their food offerings and customer service as well as for their musical lineups. LaureLive will offer exciting daytime activities for kids of all ages—inflatables, face painting, and green-screen technology are just a few of the offerings for families in the Kid Zone. Additionally, music education, songwriting classes and performance workshops will be offered.
“This festival did not come together overnight,” stated Elevation Group president and LaureLive executive producer Denny Young. “Laurel approached us nearly a year ago, to brainstorm ways to build its ‘Music with a Mission’ platform. What we announced today is the culmination of months of planning and communication. This is a great opportunity for Laurel, but also the beginning of a tremendous asset for Greater Cleveland. It is something that we are very proud to be a part of.”
The Laurel School/Elevation Group relationship extends beyond the production of a music festival and into the classroom. As a part of this unique collaboration, Laurel and Elevation will create an experiential learning opportunity for Laurel’s Upper School students. Students will have active roles in the production and staging of the event, and delve into learning all the aspects associated with event production, marketing, public relations, sponsorships, talent relations, artist booking, contracts and legal and more.
As part of the LaureLive unveiling, the Elevation Group announced Music Elevates, a new public 501(c)(3) that is being formed and initially funded through a private family foundation – The Wesley Family Foundation. Music Elevates will serve Northeastern Ohio by focusing its efforts on and contributions towards music education and music participation for students across the community aged 3-18. The Wesley Family Foundation, through Music Elevates, is providing a grant to help ensure a successful first year for LaureLive. Part of this grant will make it possible for the Contemporary Youth Orchestra to appear at LaureLive. Additional Music Elevates partnerships will be announced shortly.
