The evening started off with a few warm up songs from Coco Dolenz and the band before the “Monkee Man” (as John Lennon called him) hit the stage.
The evening started off with several Monkees songs – Stepping Stone, That Was Then, This Is Now, Little Bit Me and For Pete’s Sake. Micky told some stories of his time with the Beatles, sitting in on some of the Sgt Pepper recordings, then playing Good Morning and Sgt Pepper Reprise.
His audition song competing against about 400 others was Johnny B Goode, which he rocked thru with the band.
Many people know that Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees, an odd combination for some, so Micky finished up the first set with Purple Haze, Me and Magdelena and Last Train to Clarksville.
The second set consisted of more songs of his meetings with Stephen Stills and Elton John – performing For What It’s Worth and Your Song. Then back to more Monkees classics – Valleri, You Just Might Be The One, Lookout (Here Comes Tomorrow), Daydream Believer and Pleasant Valley Sunday. Mixed in was Coco singing Different Drum, written by Michael Nesmith.
The encore was Gimme Some Lovin, No Time and I’m A Believer.
