“Come away with me in the night………”! As soon as Norah Jones sang her first lyrics last night at Blossom Music Center she instantly had her enchanting voice capture my heart with the music of a musical goddess. Her sultry, sexy, smoke filled jazz bar voice is just unrelenting in its beauty. When she combines it with her incredible piano and guitar playing, well it is a force to be reckoned with.
On tour in support of her new album, “Visions”, Norah Jones had the fans, for a pavilion only show, in the palm of her hands. Along with an amazing four-piece band, she performed a 19-song set that included songs from “Visions” and hits from her career. While her songs with her on guitar were great, I much preferred the songs with her playing on the piano and organ. She told the crowd that she loved the beautiful venue, introduced her band, introduced her songs, but, other than that, not very much crowd interaction. Although, before a couple of songs, she said there was a bug on her keyboard and she tried to “swoosh” it off. Eventually it moved off without any harm to it. For the entire set, I was on “Planet Norah” and did not want to leave!
Opening for Norah Jones was 1999 Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee, the iconic Mavis Staples. A nearly 40-minute set of “take me to church” Blues/Gospel/Motown/Rock N Roll music that was simply amazing. I don’t care if the Beatles would come up on stage with Mavis Staples, she rules the concert stage court! She told the crowd that she was there to make everyone feel better than they did when they arrived to Blossom Music Center and after her set, every single person in the crowd got up on their feet and gave Mavis Staples a standing ovation for not only for her performance, but, also for the respect of her musical career!
