This Day In Rock History – April 7th

1956

It was designed to look like a stack of records.  The Capitol Records Tower opened as “The world’s first circular office building” . Located just north of the Hollywood and Vine intersection in Los Angeles, the structure was home to Capitol’s offices and recording studios, and with 13 stories it was the tallest building allowed in earthquake territory.

1962

Shelly Fabares was just 18 and appearing as Mary Stone on TV’s The Donna Reed Show when she had the number one hit  “Johnny Angel”. The recording also featured Glen Campbell on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums and Darlene Love And The Blossoms on backup vocals. Not a bad back up band!

1967

Things to come!  San Francisco’s KMPX-FM begins playing rock ‘n’ roll album cuts instead of 45 RPM singles and the future of radio starts to shift to the FM band.

1969 

John Lennon’s first solo single as he records “Give Peace a Chance” in his Toronto hotel room. Tommy Smothers and Timothy Leary also appear on the single.

1974

Genesis finally makes their debut at the Columbus Agora after the original show was cancelled in late 73.

1979

At just 24-years old, Rickie Lee Jones gets a chance to perfom her upcoming single “Chuck E’s In Love” on Saturday Night Live. The song would bring Jones a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

1990

Elton John sings “Candle In The Wind” at Farm Aid IV in Indianapolis for 18 year old Ryan White, who will die just hours after the show from AIDS. Elton will be a pallbearer at his funeral four days later.
