This Day in Rock History: August 18th

Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: August 18

1977

Tragedy in Memphis as two girls from Missouri are killed when an 18-year old driver plows into a crowd of 2000 mourners gathered at 4AM outside Graceland following Elvis Presley’s passing. Another is critically injured and the law cracks down on the driver who was drunk and also faces charges of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident.

Later that day only 150 people are allowed into Graceland for the funeral services, though over 75,000 stand outside.  Presley was originally entombed in a mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis near his mother, though that changes quickly when a plot is uncovered to kidnap his body.   All were reinterred at Graceland.

1997

What a way to announce a tour. The Rolling Stones travel to NYC’s Brooklyn Bride in a ’55 Caddy with Mick in the driver seat to announce their Bridges to Babylon tour.
