This Day in Rock History: August 23rd

Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: August 23

1967

A birthday party to remember and some refuse to forget!  Celebrating his 21st birthday as part of a Herman’s Hermits tour, the Who’s Keith Moon gets wild at a Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan, and tries to escape police by driving a Lincoln Continental limo into the hotel pool.  Emerging from the water he tries to run from police but slips on frosting from his birthday cake and knocks out a tooth.  The group is still banned from Holiday Inns worldwide.

1970

“You don’t work, you don’t eat!”  The Velvet Underground do their final gig at New York’s Max’s Kansas City.  For the next two years, guitarist Lou Reed works for his dad as a typist at a weekly salary of $40.

1975

A farewell to the Faces as Ronnie Wood plays the World Series of Rock with Rod Stewart and the boys.  Not long after he’ll play the same concert series with the Rolling Stones.

1980

David Bowie gives an update on his Major Tom character in his single “Ashes to Ashes”.  It’s from the Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) LP, with the video costing $400,000 which, at the time, is one of the most expensive  music videos ever.
