This Day in Rock History: August 27th

Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: August 27

1965
The meeting of the minds.  The Beatles meet Elvis Presley at his Los Angeles mansion.  So nervous that they sit in silence, Elvis finally says if they don’t say something he’ll just go to bed.  That loosens things up, there’s an informal jam session and they talk music.  It’s thought there were no photos but years later The Beatles Bible publishes a picture of the band leaving with Elvis saying goodbye.

1967

The Beatles are hit broadside with news that their manager Brian Epstein was found dead in his London home from an overdose of sleeping pills. Many music historians say it starts the eventual erosion of the band.

1988

Cleveland’s Tracy Chapman goes to #1 with her self-titled album and the song “Fast Car”.  Chapman was in student productions at AB Hart Junior High in the racially charged southeast side of the city.

1990

A helicopter crash takes the life of guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan when it slams into a mountain amid heavy fog.  Vaughan had just finished.  Three members of Clapton’s crew were also killed.

1991

Pearl Jam’s album Ten produces three hit singles and establishes the group as superstars.
