Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: March 10

1966
It took four hours and twenty two takes, but Brian Wilson is finally satisfied with the backing tracks for his “God Only Knows”.  Carl Wilson plays guitar and sings but the rest of the instrumentation is provided by the top session players in The Wrecking Crew.  Additional vocals are added weeks later.
1967
Sonny and Cher guest star on NBC’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. as Jerry and Romona in the episode “The Hot Number Affair”.

1973

Pink Floyd plays Kent State University on the very day “Dark Side of the Moon”
is released.  Certified 15 times platinum, the LP stays on the Billboard charts for 741 weeks, and it’s estimated by the RIAA that one out of every fourteen people under 50 years of age in the US has a copy of the album.

1979
Nashville’s grand Ole Opry plays host to the “Godfather of Soul”, James Brown, who does “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”.  Country superstar Barbara Mandrell says it was long overdue.

2023

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band brings fifty plus years of acoustic country rock to the Kent Stage.
