1957
“Peggy Sue” is released as a single by Buddy Holly with ‘Everyday’ as the flip side. Originally entitled ‘Cindy Lou, after Holly’s niece, it was later changed to ‘Peggy Sue’ for Peggy Sue Gerron the girlfriend (and future wife) of Jerry Allison, who was the drummer for the Crickets, after the couple had temporarily broken up.

1973

Jim Croce was killed with five others when his chartered aircraft hit a tree on take off in Louisiana.  He was on his way to perform his second concert of the day.

1997

Controversy can help a record.  Teenager Barry Loukaitis had snapped into a violent rage that left three people dead and Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” was cited as a catalyst.  Defense attorneys even played the video in a Washington courtroom.
