This Day in Rock History: September 2nd

Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: September 2

1972

How did this happen!?  Anarchy reigned at the Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival in Griffin, Indiana.  200,000 show up for the show on Bull island on the Wabash River,  four times the original estimate, and three people drowned during the show.  Some of the bands pull out but Rory Gallagher, Flash, Lee Michaels, Canned Heat and others take the stage…before it’s burned down!

1988

Former Clevelander Tracy Chapman joins Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Youssu n’ Dour for the five-continent Human Rights Now! Tour that starts on this date at London’s Wembley stadium.

1989

Ozzy Osbourne is arrested after threatening to kill Sharon, his wife.  The case was dropped when the two reconcile and Ozzy goes to detox.

2013

Sir Elton John receives the first ever Brits Icon award on this date presented by his close friend Rod Stewart who calls him  “the second-best rock singer ever”.  It’s Sir Elton’s first appearance after his appendectomy.
