Time to take a look back into this day in rock history: September 5

1966

John Lennon took the role of Private Gripweed in the movie “How I Won the War” that began filming on this date.  The comedy was directed by Richard Lester and gave Lennon a temporary break from Beatle stuff.

1981

A remake of Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell tops the British charts.  Jones was the girlfriend of Marc Bolan and was driving the car that crashed and killed him.  Her version of the song came out in 1964.

2012

Joe South, who had hits with ‘Games People Play,’ ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ and ‘(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden,’ died at home in Atlanta from cardiac arrest.  He was 72. South also did session work on Bob Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” LP.
