Our good friend and a contributor to Cleveland Rock And Roll, Tom Apathy was recently interviewed in Shoutout Ohio magazine.
We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Apathy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my photography I like to think that I do more than just take pictures. I try to capture the feelings on stage. I can tell when a show is going well when the artist is having fun and love getting those shots that show that. My initial challenge was moving around in a venue to capture that great angle and light. Initially I was self-conscious about getting in people’s way when getting a shot. I am still respectful of the audience I am working around the audience and the artist on stage….looking to blend in and not take away at all from the show. Most important I have heard from many artists that they appreciate my documentation of shows to have a pictorial history of shows.
Hi Tom, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always loved photography and music. I fell into this path to combine my two loves and capture not only “national” acts that draw larger audiences, but also local talent in NE Ohio. both established and upcoming. I love capturing their emotions, their joy, in performing……and also use my medium as a way to capture and preserve these amazing moments at various shows.
I want those viewing my photos to feel like they were at the show.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
NE Ohio has many great places…most that I have photographed The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. The Metroparks, The Beachland Ballroom. The Rialto Theater. The Kent Stage. Coventry
East Side West Side….Akron…Kent…..NE Ohio is such that you only have to travel a couple miles and find a great place to be entertained…..great food…..scenic areas….historic sites
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family for their support in this next phase in my life after a 40 year career in manufacturing management. Also the local artists who have become friends and very supportive of my work.
