Top Ten List – Special 4/20 Edition

The Top Ten Songs About Being Stoned.

Before we release the cloud of songs we need to delve into the meaning of 4/20 day courtesy of the Associated Press.

The origins of the date and the term “420” generally were long and murky. Some claim it came from a police code for pot possession and another was that it came from Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35” with it’s refrain of “everybody must get stoned” and 420 being the product of 12 times 35.

The most prevailing explanation is that it started in the 1970’s at San Rafael High School in California where a group of bell-bottomed buddies who called themselves “The Waldos” during the fall of 1971 at 4:20p.m right after class was over. They would meet at the school’s statue of chemist Louis Pasteur and smoke a joint. They coded the meeting “420 Louis” then later just “420”.

A brother of one of the Waldos was a close friend of Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead and the Waldos began hanging out in the band’s circle and the slang spread.

In the 90’s. Steve Bloom a reporter for High Times was at a Grateful Dead show and was handed a flyer urging people to “meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing in Marion Country at the Bolinas Ridge sunset spot on Mount Tamalpais” and High Times published the flyer and the myth and legend was on it’s way.

We hope you all have a wonderful 420 day as you celebrate. I know most of us will…..
